The student should be able to describe the requirements that different communication situations set, increase the skill in verbal and written communication and to illustrate some language theoretical questions. After the course, the student should be able to:
- have knowledge about scientific communication processes and to understand how information resources are organized.
- use relevant tools for information retrieval and to critical scrutinize the result
- communicate according to given conditions
- structure and present information
- act as opponent on other students' texts and verbal presentations
- describe and use basic ethical theories, principles and concepts to analyze ethical problems in natural sciences and technology.
- explain the importance of professional responsibility.
As part of this the student has to know how to
- apply various aspects of linguistic theory on the student’s own communication
- argue both in oral and written form due to given conditions
- present information both in oral and written form
- analyse and evaluate both oral and written communication
- discuss, on the basis of ethical theory, ethical implications of specific cases in science and technology.
Course content
The lectures discuss:
- General communication theory and how to act as opponent on other written presentations
- Oral presentation
- Information retrieval
- Rhetoric
- Ethical theories, principles and concepts
Teaching and working methods
The course consists of lectures and seminars. The course runs over the entire autmn semester.
