  • English basic course 30 ECTS credits, English intermediate course 30 ECTS credits and English in-depth course 30 ECTS credits with a minimum of 70 ECTS credits passed, including all language proficiency

Intended learning outcomes

After completion of the course the student should on an advanced level be able to

  • conduct in-depth literary analyses and systematically integrate their knowledge of English literature and of various schools of literary theory
  • critically compare and apply a number of literary methods and theories to literary texts in English
  • apply relevant literary theory to literary text in an independently written paper
  • consistently follow the accepted norms for academic writing in linguistics in terms of structure, citation and referencing
  • use correct and suitable language for academic writing in English.

Course content

The course comprises an in-depth orientation in literary texts in English, analysing different literary and historical epochs in dialogue with various theoretical perspectives. The course may be included as part of the Master’s Course in English, 60 ECTS credits.

Teaching and working methods

Teaching takes the form of lectures and compulsory seminars. Furthermore, the student is to carry out independent studies.

The medium of instruction and examination: English.

Examination

This course is examined through a combination of active seminar participation, written assignments and an independent written paper. 

At least a pass/participated on each part of the course is required to pass the course. In addition, a pass with distinction is required for the written paper in order to pass the whole course with distinction.

If special circumstances prevail, and if it is possible with consideration of the nature of the compulsory component, the examiner may decide to replace the compulsory component with another equivalent component.

If the LiU coordinator for students with disabilities has granted a student the right to an adapted examination for a written examination in an examination hall, the student has the right to it.

If the coordinator has recommended for the student an adapted examination or alternative form of examination, the examiner may grant this if the examiner assesses that it is possible, based on consideration of the course objectives.

An examiner may also decide that an adapted examination or alternative form of examination if the examiner assessed that special circumstances prevail, and the examiner assesses that it is possible while maintaining the objectives of the course.

Students failing an exam covering either the entire course or part of the course twice are entitled to have a new examiner appointed for the reexamination.

Students who have passed an examination may not retake it in order to improve their grades.
