Intended learning outcomes

On completion of the course the student will on an advanced level be able to:

• conduct in-depth linguistic analyses and systematically integrate his/her knowledge of English linguistics from different perspectives
• analyse linguistic features typical of different eras and account for the development of the English language from Old English to Early Modern English with regards to the etymology, phonology, morphology, syntax, vocabulary and orthography of English
• independently apply a relevant linguistic method in a delimited study of the history of English
• consistently follow the accepted norms for academic writing in linguistics in terms of structure, citation and referencing
• use correct and suitable language for academic writing in English

Course content

The course covers the development of the English language from Old English to Early Modern English based on a selection of texts from different eras. It also includes linguistic analysis as regards phonology, morphology, syntax, vocabulary and orthography. Taking a specific research question about the history of English as a point of departure, the student will also conduct an independent and delimited empirical study using a relevant linguistic method. The course may be included as part of the Master’s Course in English, 60 ECTS.

Teaching and working methods

Teaching takes the form of lectures, seminars, exercises and supervision. Furthermore, the student is to carry out independent studies. 

The medium of instruction and examination: English.

Examination

The course is examined through exams as well as a written independent and delimited study. 

At least a pass on each part of the course is required to pass the course. In addition, a pass with distinction is required for at least 4 ECTS credits with differentiated grades in order to pass the whole course with distinction.

If special circumstances prevail, and if it is possible with consideration of the nature of the compulsory component, the examiner may decide to replace the compulsory component with another equivalent component.

If the LiU coordinator for students with disabilities has granted a student the right to an adapted examination for a written examination in an examination hall, the student has the right to it.

If the coordinator has recommended for the student an adapted examination or alternative form of examination, the examiner may grant this if the examiner assesses that it is possible, based on consideration of the course objectives.

An examiner may also decide that an adapted examination or alternative form of examination if the examiner assessed that special circumstances prevail, and the examiner assesses that it is possible while maintaining the objectives of the course.

Students failing an exam covering either the entire course or part of the course twice are entitled to have a new examiner appointed for the reexamination.

Students who have passed an examination may not retake it in order to improve their grades.

Planning and implementation of a course must take its starting point in the wording of the syllabus. The course evaluation included in each course must therefore take up the question how well the course agrees with the syllabus.
