After completion of the course, the students will be able to:

  • apply theory and method in a selected area – either within the discipline of English language studies or English literary studies
  • demonstrate a basic understanding of how research questions are formulated
  • independently formulate and solve problems, and present the result of such problems
  • in writing apply accepted academic referencing systems when using primary and secondary sources
  • in their use of primary and secondary sources, apply source criticism and demonstrate research ethical considerations
  • carry out a task within a given time frame

Course content

The course provides an opportunity to work on a small research project within an area that interests the student with the help of a dedicated supervisor/researcher, on either a language-oriented or a literature-oriented subject. This research project hones the student’s academic research skills, as well as their academic writing skills. Some examples of research areas are literary characters, the subtitling of sitcoms, literary surrealism and conversation-analytic studies of presidential speeches.

Teaching and working methods

Most of the student’s own work consists of individual, critical, independent reading and writing. Supervision is provided individually and, sometimes, in a group setting. Feedback is mainly provided in writing.

An examiner may also decide that an adapted examination or alternative form of examination if the examiner assessed that special circumstances prevail, and the examiner assesses that it is possible while maintaining the objectives of the course.
