Entry requirements

Passing grade in Spanish, basic course and completed Spanish, continuation course with at least 15 HE credits approved (or the equivalent), in which the language proficiency test should be included.

Intended learning outcomes

On completion of the course, the student should be able to:

- account for the contents of a Swedish text in a for the Spanish language adequate way;
- analyse Spanish language usage and its development with use of linguistic terms;
- analyse Spanish-language literature based on a critical scholarly approach;
- write an independent scholarly work in the Spanish language, literature or cultural science or within didactics and defend the work at a seminar;
- relate to theory and methodology in a scholarly acceptable way;
- present a critical review of a scholarly work.

Course content

The course is organised in the form of two modules and an essay:

Linguistics 7.5 HE credits
This module contains an introduction to linguistic theory and method, and in-depth studies in grammar and stylistics. It also includes studies of linguistic texts and exercises in translation, written language proficiency in connection with the thesis work and assessment of essays.

Literature 7.5 HE credits
This module contains an introduction to literary-critical theory and method and their application to Spanish-speaking literary texts from the 16th century to the present day. Studies of literary-critical works are included.

Essay 15 HE credits
The student carries out a smaller study in the linguistic, literary-critical, cultural-scientific or didactic field. The study is presented in the form of an essay.

Teaching and working methods

The working methods are lectures, learning support seminars, literature studies, group work, tutoring and writing of an essay. The students are expected to participate actively both in discussions and in written and oral practical assignments in connection with the teaching.

Examination

The course is examined through a written examination, oral and written presentation, a take-home examination, review of a paper, critical oral review and defence. The examination is an individual effort.

Students failing an exam covering either the entire course or part of the course twice are entitled to have a new examiner appointed for the reexamination.

Students who have passed an examination may not retake it in order to improve their grades.
