  • History of art, basic course 30 ECTS credits with at least 22,5 ECTS credits passed (or the equivalent).

Intended learning outcomes

On completion of the course, the student should:
- demonstrate advanced ability to account for advanced knowledge of central fields in the subject, where pictorial psychological, pictorial sociological and ethnological as well as art theoretical, technical and pictorial analytical perspectives are displayed,
- demonstrate knowledge that is applicable on different labour market-related fields in the cultural sector
- have acquired increased ability to formulate himself or herself, in speech and writing, in a way that demonstrates advanced ability to discuss and interpret relevant facts in the subject, with regard to scientific, social and ethical aspects,
- have acquired knowledge that can be applicable to continued studies that require ability to independently solve the tasks that are required for the advancement to higher level of studies in the subject
- through text studies and group assignments, have acquired an increased knowledge and understanding of the subject.

Course content

Conception, Production and Reception of Artefacts, 7.5 HE credits (Bildens tillkomst och upplevelsen av bilden)
With examples from different eras, the course covers image conception and technical procedures in the creation of images of different kinds (painting, graphics, photography, etcetera). Also highlighted are the preconditions and the conditions for image perception and pictorial experiences from cultural-scientific aspects.

Picture and Architecture Analysis, 7.5 HE credits (Bild- och arkitekturanalys)
By means of examples from older and more recent time, the course covers theories and methods for description and interpretation of the appearance, contents and different layers of meaning of images, buildings and created environments.

Individually Composed Paper, 7.5 HE credits (Uppsats (individuell uppgift))
The essay, whose subject is decided in consultation with the supervisor, has requirements of research documentation and critical approach to the material, as well as precision in the practical implementation. The course module also includes an orientation in bibliography.

Image and Society, 7.5 HE credits (Bild och samhälle)
The image is placed in its socio-cultural context and is regarded as an expression for the needs and values of a society or different groups. The functions, forms of communication and reception of the image are highlighted, as is the role of the image creators and the conditions for their activities.

Teaching and working methods

During the course, teaching takes the form of lectures. In addition to this, the course includes seminars, group work, practical exercises and study visits, which include, within the framework of the student's actions, preparations for the discussions, studies of course literature, review of other students' essays and leading seminars, etcetera. Seminars, practical exercises and study visits are compulsory parts.

Examination

The modules are examined separately through take-home examinations or continuous written and group assignments, as well as through active participation in compulsory parts. The examination of the thesis course includes a presentation of the own thesis work and a review of another thesis.

If the LiU coordinator for students with disabilities has granted a student the right to an adapted examination for a written examination in an examination hall, the student has the right to it. If the coordinator has instead recommended for the student an adapted examination or alternative form of examination, the examiner may grant this if the examiner assesses that it is possible, based on consideration of the course objectives.

Students failing an exam covering either the entire course or part of the course twice are entitled to have a new examiner appointed for the reexamination.

Students who have passed an examination may not retake it in order to improve their grades.
