G1XIntended learning outcomes
On completion of the course, the student should be able to:
- account for the theories and arguments of an important classic philosopher,
- present central parts of one or more works of the chosen philosopher, and demonstrate an insight into how the theories of the philosopher have been interpreted and received in more recent contexts.
Course content
The course is focused on a philosopher who is classical in the sense of being a reference point for much subsequent philosophy. The classic that will be focused on changes each semester that the course is given. The choice is made from a selection of philosophers that have a broad relevance and highlights different parts of the fields of philosophy. Some of the philosophers that the course may focus on are Plato, Aristotle, Spinoza, Locke, Hume and Edge.
Teaching and working methods
The teaching takes the form of lectures that in part are in seminar form by being designed as discussions of certain parts of original text (in Swedish or English translation). The students should also study independently.
Examination
The course is examined through a written review, either through an essay at the regular examination or through a written examination at the re-examination.
Students failing an exam covering either the entire course or part of the course twice are entitled to have a new examiner appointed for the reexamination.
Students who have passed an examination may not retake it in order to improve their grades.
