Intended learning outcomes
After completion of the course, the students should be able to:
- write a disposition of written technical/scientific reports,
- correctly indicate and use citations and references in written papers,
- review and critically analyse scholarly papers,
- account for and follow the basic rules and regulations for advanced studies at Swedish universities, especially at LiU.
Course content
The course prepares the students for advanced academic studies and the students learn the academic culture in general. The students are trained in argumentation analysis, critical thinking and seminar presentations. The course contains e.g.
- Academic writing
- Review of scientific work
- Constructive criticism
- Argumentation analysis
- University rules, organization and ethical rules
- Rules on citation and reference
- Academic culture
- Student-centered learning
- Anti-discrimination and equal opportunities
- Introduction to LiU
- Library facilities.
Teaching and working methods
The course has scheduled lectures and seminars. The seminars are held in smaller groups . During the seminars, the students should discuss and review scholarly works.
Examination
Attendance at least 80% of the lectures. Active participation in seminars.
Students failing an exam covering either the entire course or part of the course twice are entitled to have a new examiner appointed for the reexamination.
Students who have passed an examination may not retake it in order to improve their grades.

Planning and implementation of a course must take its starting point in the wording of the syllabus. The course evaluation included in each course must therefore take up the question how well the course agrees with the syllabus.
The course is carried out in such a way that both men´s and women´s experience and knowledge is made visible and developed.
