On completion of the course, the students should on an advanced level be able to:
- analyse ethical theories relevant to migration and migration policy
- discuss and analyse ethical issues that may arise in relation to migration
- apply ethical theories, principles, and concepts in the analysis of concrete migration issues
- critically evaluate ethical analyses in a constructive manner
- critically explain different positions and arguments within ethics and migration
Course content
In the first, theory-focused part of the course, a theoretical framework for justice regarding migration is introduced. This framework serves as the starting point for a critical discussion on key issues concerning transnational migration. Arguments for and against immigration restrictions, as well as the rights and obligations between states and (various categories of) migrants, are systematically analysed.
In the second, more applied part of the course, migration policy is analysed based on the theoretical framework. Justice criteria are used to assess the extent to which concrete political decisions, such as policies on border control, medical age assessments of asylum seekers, and bilateral labor agreements concerning healthcare personnel, can be considered ethically defensible.
Teaching and working methods
The course includes lectures, group discussions, and writing assignments. Students are also expected to engage in self-study.
Language of instruction and examination: English.

- individual written examination, grade: EC
For a final grade of Pass (E), at least an E on the individual written assignment and a pass on other parts are required. A higher grade will be based on the individual written examination.

ECTS, ECOther information
Planning and implementation of a course must take its starting point in the wording of the syllabus. The course evaluation included in each course must therefore take up the question how well the course agrees with the syllabus.
The course is conducted in such a way that there are equal opportunities with regard to sex, transgender identity or expression, ethnicity, religion or other belief, disability, sexual orientation and age.
If special circumstances prevail, the vice-chancellor may in a special decision specify the preconditions for temporary deviations from this course syllabus, and delegate the right to take such decisions.
