Intended learning outcomes

On completion of the course, the student should be able to
- account for the stabilisation policy institutions, the possibilities and problems with stabilisation policy and evaluate the suitability of different types of measures
- account for the duties of the state the in the economic field, analyse the effects of financial policy actions and evaluate the suitability of various types of market actions
- analyse the socioeconomic utilities and costs in the socioeconomic profitability calculations
- account for the meaning of "public choice" and analyse the effects of such an approach on economic policy
- identify, structure and present issues and suitable financial policy solutions within a field of economics

Course content

How stabilisation policy in the form of fiscal, monetary and exchange policy should be designed under different conditions and how the stabilisation policy in Sweden functions today and has functioned previously.
The role and duties of the state in a welfare state in the form of social security systems, public production and pricing of public employments, taxes and regulations. Public choice as an approach to how public influence is exercised. Basic principles of socioeconomic profitability calculations and how utility and costs are identified, quantified and evaluated. A closer study of market imperfections and the role of the state within certain sectors, for example the housing market or the financial markets.

Teaching and working methods

The teaching takes the form of lectures and seminars. at one occasion, simulation exercise in conducting stabilisation policy under some given conditions will be carried out. This exercise is followed up with an evaluation of the results achieved. At one occasion, the students should orally present a subarea of the course in groups. In other respects, the student works independently with studying the reading list and in groups with preparations of a group assignment that should be presented orally.

Examination

An individual written examination. A group presentation on a chosen field of politics with individual evaluation a posteriori. Compulsory attendance on and follow up of a simulation exercise stabilisation policy. Detailed information can be found in the study guide.

Students failing an exam covering either the entire course or part of the course twice are entitled to have a new examiner appointed for the reexamination.

Students who have passed an examination may not retake it in order to improve their grades.
