Intended learning outcomes

The aim of the course is that the student should be able to carry out a larger cohesive work on first-cycle level in statistics.

On completion of the course, the student should be able to:

  • profit by the contents of relevant nonfiction in the area of the current work, and place the work in a context
  • use knowledge and skills that have been acquired in the studies on first-cycle level.
  • write an essay in statistics at first-cycle level and be able to orally present and defend the essay and its message for an audience with varying degrees of knowledge in statistics.
  • carry out a review of another essay at first-cycle level in statistics.

Course content

The contents of the course are decided on the basis of on a problem that is chosen for each group. As a rule, the problem should be an application from outside of the university. The course is devoted to solving the chosen problem with the assistance of supplementary literature studies and writing of an essay. The essay should be defended at a public seminar with a critical review. The course also includes a review of another group's degree project (or the equivalent).

Teaching and working methods

Apart from independent studies, the teaching consists of joint supervision and seminars. The thesis work should normally be carried out in a group of two individuals. In exceptional cases, the work may be carried out by one individual.

Examination

The course is examined through written and oral presentation of the completed work. The written presentation should be in the form of a report. The oral examination is done through presentation and defence of the own report and a review of another bachelor's essay (or the equivalent) at a public final review.

If the LiU coordinator for students with disabilities has granted a student the right to an adapted examination for a written examination in an examination hall, the student has the right to it. If the coordinator has instead recommended for the student an adapted examination or alternative form of examination, the examiner may grant this if the examiner assesses that it is possible, based on consideration of the course objectives.

Students failing an exam covering either the entire course or part of the course twice are entitled to have a new examiner appointed for the reexamination.

Students who have passed an examination may not retake it in order to improve their grades.
