Entry requirements
Admission to the Psychologist Programme is required for admission to the course, as well as satisfaction of the requirements for the current threshold rules.
Intended learning outcomes
On completion of the course, the student should be able to:
- master basic statistical and qualitative analytical methods as they are presented in current empirical research
- handle statistical programs and carry out basic analyses regarding differences and relationships.
- transcribe qualitative data
- account for and apply the steps of variance analysis, regression analysis, factor analysis and meta-analysis
- account for and apply the steps of using grounded theory, and some form of discourse analysis/phenomenologically aimed qualitative analytical method.
Course content
The course is an advanced study of method knowledge within the field of psychology. Strong emphasis is on current empirical research and practical handling of collected data of quantitative and qualitative nature. The course includes practical skills in transcribing qualitative data and carrying out statistical calculations with the statistical program SPSS (or the equivalent). In addition to the practical exercises, the course includes interpretation of published research. The course is a preparation for the thesis and aims to provide methodological tools for the degree project.
Teaching and working methods
The course contents will be introduced via lectures, group work, computer illustrations, exercises and written assignments. In addition to this, the students should study independently, individually and/or in groups.
Examination
Examination, compulsory exercises and written assignments and active participation in the tutorial group work. Detailed information can be found in the study guide.
If the LiU coordinator for students with disabilities has granted a student the right to an adapted examination for a written examination in an examination hall, the student has the right to it. If the coordinator has instead recommended for the student an adapted examination or alternative form of examination, the examiner may grant this if the examiner assesses that it is possible, based on consideration of the course objectives.
Students failing an exam covering either the entire course or part of the course twice are entitled to have a new examiner appointed for the reexamination.
Students who have passed an examination may not retake it in order to improve their grades.
