Intended learning outcomes

On completion of the course, the student should

- be able to demonstrate an understanding of psychology as a subject of science and how psychology can be applied in different situations
- at a basic level, be able to account for and reflect critically around central concepts, theories, models and research results in psychology, orally and in writing,
- be able to give examples of central psychological phenomena and be able to explain these based on relevant theories,
- at a basic level, be able to apply psychological theories on specific problems,
- at a basic level, be able to reason about a question from different theoretical perspectives and compare these, orally and in writing
- at a basic level, be able to identify information needs, use relevant search tools and critically review search results related to psychology.

Course content

The course covers psychology as a uniform subject, spanning from neuropsychology to social psychology.

Fundamentals of Psychology, 6 HE credits (Psykologins grunder)
This module covers the history of psychology, theory of knowledge and its biological and humanistic basis. A basic orientation in the research methodology of psychology is also given.

Cognitive and Developmental Psychology, 9 HE credits (Kognitiv psykologi och utvecklingspsykologi)
This module covers cognitive abilities, such as awareness, attention, learning, memory, language and thinking, as well as cognitive, social and emotional development.

Personality and Clinical Psychology, 7.5 credits (Personlighetspsykologi och klinisk psykologi)
This module covers personality, individual differences, mental disturbance/disease and psychological/psychotherapeutic treatment.

Health Psychology and Social Psychology, 7.5 HE credits (Hälsopsykologi och socialpsykologi)
This module covers central and classic health- and socio-psychological phenomena of individuals and groups. Coping, stress, obedience and conformity are examples of such psychological phenomena. During the course, such concepts will be applied on different individual and group-related human problems and critically reviewed, based on a cultural-psychology approach.

Teaching and working methods

The working methods of the course consist of lectures, seminars, laboratory sessions/experiments, exercises and written assignments. In addition to this, the students should study independently, individually and/or in groups.

Examination

Examination, compulsory lectures, compulsory exercises and written assignments.

Students failing an exam covering either the entire course or part of the course twice are entitled to have a new examiner appointed for the reexamination.

Students who have passed an examination may not retake it in order to improve their grades.

Grades

Three-grade scale, U, G, VG

Planning and implementation of a course must take its starting point in the wording of the syllabus. The course evaluation included in each course must therefore take up the question how well the course agrees with the syllabus.
