General entry requirements apply for admission to the course, and the student should also be admitted to the Psychologist Programme and satisfy the requirements for the current threshold rules.

Intended learning outcomes

On completion of the course, the student should be able to:
- account for and critically review the importance of various potential traumatic life events for the mental and physical development of children/adults
- account for and critically review symptoms of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and dissociation in children and adults
- account for and critically review the assessment and assessment instruments of experienced traumas
- apply crisis treatment
- account for and critically review different methods for the treatment of symptoms after potentially traumatic life events.

Course content

The course covers the importance of different potential traumatic life changes for the mental and physical health of children, adolescents and adults. The course also covers crisis support, possible symptoms of traumatisation and treatment. The course focuses on the consequences of various types of traumas, such as extreme traumatisation, sexual abuse, physical assault. Teaching of the diagnoses post-traumatic stress and dissociation will be included. Also included is an overview of assessment instruments to identify symptoms after traumatic experiences, as well as general knowledge of methods for the treatment of these states.

Teaching and working methods

The course contents will be introduced via lectures, seminars, role plays and exercises and written assignments. A large part of the course is devoted to tutorial group work. In addition to this, the student should study independently, individually and/or in groups

Examination, compulsory exercises and written assignments and active participation in tutorial group work. Detailed information can be found in the study guide.

Students failing an exam covering either the entire course or part of the course twice are entitled to have a new examiner appointed for the reexamination.

Students who have passed an examination may not retake it in order to improve their grades.
