Intended learning outcomes

After completion of the course the student will be able to:

• Critically discuss the interaction between culture, history and social change in specific contexts
• Problematize contemporary methods in critical heritage studies and apply them to case studies
• Identify problem areas and knowledge gaps in critical heritage studies
• Account for and discuss different interdisciplinary and international perspectives in cultural heritage research
• Critically discuss the relation between local and global heritage

Course content

The world today is more connected than ever before, yet we often tend to cling to universalistic and simplistic notions of the cultural heritages of its many societies. In the midst of misunderstanding and lack of translation of the cultural heritage concept, the ‘local’ is constantly clashing with the ‘global’. Different academic disciplines struggle to develop research methods that address this dynamicity and overcome often misleading binaries. This course provides current tools and concepts to develop research practices that are interdisciplinary, collaborative, and applicable to a variety of specific contexts. It builds an understanding of the multi-faceted interdependency of cultural heritage while identifying both local and global ways of thinking and bridging them through learned research practices.

Teaching and working methods

This course is based on lectures, seminars, and group work. Homework and independent study are a necessary complement to these forms of teaching.

Examination

The course uses the following forms of examination:

• Active participation in seminars, grading scale: EC, P/F
• Individual oral presentation, grading scale: EC, P/F
• Individual written assignment, grading scale: EC

For a passing grade in the course (E), the student must pass the individual written assignment with at least an E and a grade of Pass on the two other forms of examination. Higher grades are given depending on the grade on the individual written assignment.

If special circumstances prevail, and if it is possible with consideration of the nature of the compulsory component, the examiner may decide to replace the compulsory component with another equivalent component.

If the LiU coordinator for students with disabilities has granted a student the right to an adapted examination for a written examination in an examination hall, the student has the right to it.

If the coordinator has recommended for the student an adapted examination or alternative form of examination, the examiner may grant this if the examiner assesses that it is possible, based on consideration of the course objectives.

An examiner may also decide that an adapted examination or alternative form of examination if the examiner assessed that special circumstances prevail, and the examiner assesses that it is possible while maintaining the objectives of the course.

Students failing an exam covering either the entire course or part of the course twice are entitled to have a new examiner appointed for the reexamination.

Students who have passed an examination may not retake it in order to improve their grades.

Planning and implementation of a course must take its starting point in the wording of the syllabus. The course evaluation included in each course must therefore take up the question how well the course agrees with the syllabus.
