at least 45 ECTS credits passed in Social and Cultural Analysis, year 1

Intended learning outcomes

On completion of the course, the student should be able to:

- account for perspectives on and relationships between the concepts of living conditions, identity and neighborhood
- reflect on the importance of the neighbourhood for living conditions and identity forming processes
- account for how neighbourhood and neighbourhood concepts have changed over time and how views on human living conditions have changed socially, culturally and historically
- reflect on sustainability and sustainable development in relation to neighborhood

Course content

The course covers theoretical concepts and perspectives on identity and neighbourhood in analysis of people's living conditions. Neighbourhood and notions of neighbourhood are also addressed from historical and comparative perspectives with specific emphasis on the development of the city. The course includes issues concerning vicinity, mobility, integration and participation/local democracy in political and institutional contexts. The issues are put in perspectives based on the concepts of age, gender, class and ethnicity in accordance with the students' choices. The course also covers methodological and ethical aspects of neighbourhood studies. The course also discusses how the above-mentioned aspects can be related to the development of sustainable cities and communities.

Teaching and working methods

The teaching consists of lectures, seminars, individual and group exercises as well as supervision. Examination

The course is examined by:

active participation in seminars, grading scale: D
written group assignment, grading scale: UG
oral presentation in groups, grading scale: UG
individual written reflection, grading scale: UG
individual written assignment, grading scale: UV

For Passed final grade, Pass is required in all parts. For Pass with Distinction, Pass with Distinction is also required on the individually written assignment.

If special circumstances prevail, and if it is possible with consideration of the nature of the compulsory component, the examiner may decide to replace the compulsory component with another equivalent component.

If the LiU coordinator for students with disabilities has granted a student the right to an adapted examination for a written examination in an examination hall, the student has the right to it.

If the coordinator has recommended for the student an adapted examination or alternative form of examination, the examiner may grant this if the examiner assesses that it is possible, based on consideration of the course objectives.

An examiner may also decide that an adapted examination or alternative form of examination if the examiner assessed that special circumstances prevail, and the examiner assesses that it is possible while maintaining the objectives of the course.

Students failing an exam covering either the entire course or part of the course twice are entitled to have a new examiner appointed for the reexamination.

Students who have passed an examination may not retake it in order to improve their grades.
