General entry requirements for undergraduate studies

History and Social Studies corresponding to the level in Swedish upper secondary education (Historia 1b/(1a1 and 1a2) and Samhällskunskap 1b/(1a1 and 1a2)

English corresponding to the level of English in Swedish upper secondary education (Engelska 6)
and
120 ECTS credits in Social and Cultural Analysis, or the equivalent
and
Passed in the course Fieldwork in school year 2 and passed courses from semester 1 and 2
Intended learning outcomes
On completion of the course, the student should be able to
- formulate a scientifically based problem, issues, select methods and theories relevant to the issue, and make ethical assessments in relation to the chosen methods and study objects,
- collect, evaluate and analyse a material based on specified and delimited problem formulations, methods and theories
- evaluate and critically reflect on one's own and others' studies considering scientific, ethical and social aspects
Course content
The thesis work means an advanced study of subject-related methodological and theoretical knowledge. The subject of the thesis is chosen in consultation with the supervisor and should be within the scope of relevant areas of knowledge. The choice can also be based on external investigation and evaluation assignments.
Teaching and working methods
The teaching is based on student active working methods. Teaching mainly takes the form of individual supervision or in groups.
Examination
The course is examined in several parts. The examinations are both in oral and written form. The written examination comprises the thesis work. Oral examination takes place through defence of the own thesis work and review of another essay, as well as participation in at least one more examination seminar. A passing grade in all these parts is required to pass.
If special circumstances prevail, and if it is possible with consideration of the nature of the compulsory component, the examiner may decide to replace the compulsory component with another equivalent component.
If the LiU coordinator for students with disabilities has granted a student the right to an adapted examination for a written examination in an examination hall, the student has the right to it.
If the coordinator has recommended for the student an adapted examination or alternative form of examination, the examiner may grant this if the examiner assesses that it is possible, based on consideration of the course objectives.
An examiner may also decide that an adapted examination or alternative form of examination if the examiner assessed that special circumstances prevail, and the examiner assesses that it is possible while maintaining the objectives of the course.
Students failing an exam covering either the entire course or part of the course twice are entitled to have a new examiner appointed for the reexamination.
Students who have passed an examination may not retake it in order to improve their grades.

Planning and implementation of a course must take its starting point in the wording of the syllabus. The course evaluation included in each course must therefore take up the question how well the course agrees with the syllabus.

If special circumstances prevail, the vice-chancellor may in a special decision specify the preconditions for temporary deviations from this course syllabus, and delegate the right to take such decisions.
