Intended learning outcomes

On completion of the course, the student should, at a basic level, be able to
- use knowledge of the basic concepts and methods of social anthropology,
- use knowledge of the research and application fields of anthropology,
- apply a socio-anthropological perspective in studying this society and other societies,
- in writing, independently work from a socio-anthropological perspective.

Course content

Introduction to Social Anthropology, 7.5 HE credits
This module covers the anthropological culture concept and its importance for people's everyday behaviour, and participant observation as an anthropological research method.

Cultural and Social Variations I, 7.5 HE credits
This module covers cultural variation in conceptions of relationship, emotions, gender and sexuality.

Cultural and Social Variation II, 7.5 HE credits
This module covers cultural variation in social organisation, political systems and economics. Focus is on cultural conceptions of the individual and individuality.

Contemporary Issues from a Socio-Anthropological Perspective, 7.5 HE credits
This module comprises an independent, individual work in writing (essay), applied to current events and phenomena, from a socio-anthropological perspective.

Teaching and working methods

The course work mainly consists of independent literature studies. In addition, there will be teaching in the form of lectures, film screenings, seminars, work in groups and individual supervision. The seminars in all cases imply work that should be carried out in advance.

Examination

The three first modules are examined in part continuously within the scope of the teaching, through results of work in groups presented in writing, and in part at the end of each module, through an individual assignment presented in writing (take-home examination). The fourth module is examined through an individual assignment in writing (essay) at the end of the module.

Three-grade scale, U, G, VG

Other information

Planning and implementation of a course must take its starting point in the wording of the syllabus. The course evaluation included in each course must therefore take up the question how well the course agrees with the syllabus. The course is carried out in such a way that both men´s and women´s experience and knowledge is made visible and developed.
