For admission to the course, completed Social Anthropology, basic course is required, with at least 22.5 HE credits approved, including the essay.Intended learning outcomes
On completion of the course, the student should be able to
- present the theoretical development of anthropology;
- demonstrate knowledge of how social anthropology is used to analyse cultural processes in a world of increased globalisation;
- apply socio-anthropological perspectives and theories in written form. .
Course content
The History of Anthropology I, 7.5 HE credits (Antropologins historia I)
Through reading and analysis of selected socio-anthropological works, this module covers the classical development of ideas in the subject.
The History of Anthropology II, 7.5 HE credits (Antropologins historia II)
Through reading and analysis of certain theoretical innovators in social anthropology, this module covers the modern development of ideas in the subject.
Modernity: Global Systems and Transnational Processes, 7.5 HE credits (Modernitet: Globala system och transnationella processer)
This module covers modern and post-modern phenomena such as globalisation and transnationalism, ethnic identification and the transformation of the nation-state.
Thesis, 7.5 HE credits (Uppsats)
This module comprises an independent, individual work in writing (essay), in which theoretical perspectives from social anthropology are utilised to analyse a defined social or cultural phenomenon.
Teaching and working methods
The course work mainly consists of independent literature studies. In addition, there will be teaching in the form of lectures, film screenings, seminars, work in groups and individual supervision. The seminars in all cases imply work that should be carried out in advance. The course requires full-time studies.
Examination
The three first modules are examined in part continuously within the scope of the teaching, through results of work in groups presented in writing, and in part at the end of each module, through an individual assignment presented in writing (take-home examination). The fourth module is examined through an individual assignment in writing (essay).
Students failing an exam covering either the entire course or part of the course twice are entitled to have a new examiner appointed for the reexamination.
Students who have passed an examination may not retake it in order to improve their grades.
