Entry requirements
- Bachelor's degree equivalent to a Swedish Kandidatexamen within one of the following subject areas:
- humanities
- fine arts
- cultural studies
- social sciences
- behavioural sciences
- health sciences
- natural sciences
or equivalent - English corresponding to the level of English in Swedish upper secondary education (Engelska 6)
Exemption from Swedish - 60 ECTS credits passed from the programme
- Passed Qualitative Methods in Ethnic and Migration Studies, 7,5 ECTS credits
Intended learning outcomes
On completion of the course, the student shall be able to
- independently formulate a relevant research question within the subject of Ethnic and Migration studies;
- plan and execute qualified original research in the field of Ethnic and Migration Studies, and report it in the form of a Master's thesis;
- apply in-depth knowledge of the contents and methodology of Ethnic and Migration studies;
- contribute to the development of knowledge in Ethnic and Migration Studies, including considerable insight into current research and development work in the area of the chosen research topic;
- defend and discuss her own research in an open seminar, with an academic and scholarly perspective;
- critically evaluate and discuss other scholarly texts from an academic and scholarly perspective.
Course content
In the course, an independent research project is conducted. This involves independently designing and executing a scientific investigation as well as formulating a relevant research question within the subject of ethnicity and migration. Furthermore, it includes processing extensive theoretical and empirical material.
Teaching and working methods
The course contains thesis work, seminars, and supervision. In addition to this, the student is expected to engage in self-studies.
Examination
The course is examined through:
- Individual written master's thesis, grade: EC
- Individual oral presentation of own thesis, grade: P/F (pass/fail)
- Individual oral opposition, grade: P/F (pass/fail)
- Active participation in seminars, grade: P/F (pass/fail)
To receive a passing (E) grade, a minimum of E is required on the individual written master's thesis, along with a pass on the other components. Higher grades are based on the individual written master's thesis.
If special circumstances prevail, and if it is possible with consideration of the nature of the compulsory component, the examiner may decide to replace the compulsory component with another equivalent component.
If the LiU coordinator for students with disabilities has granted a student the right to an adapted examination for a written examination in an examination hall, the student has the right to it.
If the coordinator has recommended for the student an adapted examination or alternative form of examination, the examiner may grant this if the examiner assesses that it is possible, based on consideration of the course objectives.
An examiner may also decide that an adapted examination or alternative form of examination if the examiner assessed that special circumstances prevail, and the examiner assesses that it is possible while maintaining the objectives of the course.
Students failing an exam covering either the entire course or part of the course twice are entitled to have a new examiner appointed for the reexamination.
Students who have passed an examination may not retake it in order to improve their grades.

Planning and implementation of a course must take its starting point in the wording of the syllabus. The course evaluation included in each course must therefore take up the question how well the course agrees with the syllabus.
