Intended learning outcomes
After completing the course the student should on an advanced level be able to:
- discuss social science research on globalization and transnational migration, in relation to social work
- problematize the social situations and living conditions for individuals and groups within the context of globalization and transnational migration
- critically reflect upon social work from a comparative perspective in relation to migration and integration
- identify and critically examine possibilities of developing social work practices by using theories on anti-racist and transnational social work
Course content
The course deals with social sciences research on social work in times of globalization and transnational migration. Based on theories on welfare, migration and integration, social work is investigated in a comparative perspecitive, historically and geographically. Further, the course deals with the social situations and living conditions for individuals and groups in the context of globalization and transnational migration, with a specific focus on possibilities and challenges in social work. Not least, the course includes critical perspectives on migration and social work. On the basis of social science research, the course provides opportunities to critically reflect on how social work is shaped in the intersection between the global, national and local level. During the course, theories on anti-racist and transnational social work are put into practice in the investigation of social work practice.
Teaching and working methods
Teaching is in lesson and seminar form. Apart from this the student will carry out self-studies. Teaching language is English.

For the grade G, the student must have passed all examination assignments. For the grade VG, VG is required for the individual written examination
If special circumstances prevail, and if it is possible with consideration of the nature of the compulsory component, the examiner may decide to replace the compulsory component with another equivalent component.
If the LiU coordinator for students with disabilities has granted a student the right to an adapted examination for a written examination in an examination hall, the student has the right to it.
If the coordinator has recommended for the student an adapted examination or alternative form of examination, the examiner may grant this if the examiner assesses that it is possible, based on consideration of the course objectives.
An examiner may also decide that an adapted examination or alternative form of examination if the examiner assessed that special circumstances prevail, and the examiner assesses that it is possible while maintaining the objectives of the course.
Students failing an exam covering either the entire course or part of the course twice are entitled to have a new examiner appointed for the reexamination.
Students who have passed an examination may not retake it in order to improve their grades.

Planning and implementation of a course must take its starting point in the wording of the syllabus. The course evaluation included in each course must therefore take up the question how well the course agrees with the syllabus.
