Intended learning outcomes

On completion of the course, the student should be able to:

• account for, apply and critically review regulations concerning the protection of natural persons with regard to the processing of personal data
• account for, apply and critically review regulations and legal norms that cover cybercrime and cyber security
• account for, apply and critically review the legal and ethical considerations that arise when regulating digital platforms and social media
• account for, apply and critically review the legal principles and rules that apply to artificial intelligence (AI)
• describe, apply and critically review the basics of the regulation that protects intellectual property rights related to information technology
• critically analyse, identify and propose solutions to concrete problems that may arise in the application of IT law regulation in relation to ethical principles and actual consequences in society

Course content

The course deals with the legal framework that will be applicable in the following areas of law; protection of natural persons with regard to the processing of personal data, cybercrime and cybersecurity, digital platforms and social media, artificial intelligence and intellectual property rights related to information technology. Both global and EU legal frameworks are covered throughout the course. The course, reviews the current rules and regulations. In addition, the consequences of digitalization and the development of information technology in society are discussed from a legal and social perspective. Furthermore, future development of legal rules in IT law is discussed.

Teaching and working methods

The teaching consists of lectures and seminars. In addition to this, the student is expected to study independently.

Examination

The course is examined through:

• individual written examination, grading scale: UV
• active participation in seminars, grading scale: UG
• individual written assignments, grading scale: UG

To pass the final grade, Pass is required on all parts. To Pass with distinction, Pass with distinction is also required on the individual written exam.

If special circumstances prevail, and if it is possible with consideration of the nature of the compulsory component, the examiner may decide to replace the compulsory component with another equivalent component.

If the LiU coordinator for students with disabilities has granted a student the right to an adapted examination for a written examination in an examination hall, the student has the right to it.

If the coordinator has recommended for the student an adapted examination or alternative form of examination, the examiner may grant this if the examiner assesses that it is possible, based on consideration of the course objectives.

An examiner may also decide that an adapted examination or alternative form of examination if the examiner assessed that special circumstances prevail, and the examiner assesses that it is possible while maintaining the objectives of the course.

Students failing an exam covering either the entire course or part of the course twice are entitled to have a new examiner appointed for the reexamination.

Students who have passed an examination may not retake it in order to improve their grades.

Planning and implementation of a course must take its starting point in the wording of the syllabus. The course evaluation included in each course must therefore take up the question how well the course agrees with the syllabus.
