Documented knowledge of English equivalent to Engelska B/Engelska 6. Exemption from Swedish B/3.
Intended learning outcomes
After completion of the course the student should have fundamental knowledge of the history of Sweden as well as of contemporary Swedish society. The student should have developed an awareness of how past and present is linked, and have acquired the ability to deal with many of the myths concerning Sweden and Swedish life.
Course content
”Sweden and the Swedes” consists of two parts:
“Swedish History” (7.5 hp)
In this section of the course, the student studies the political, economic, religious, cultural, and social development in Sweden from premodern times until today.
”Swedish Culture and Society” (7.5 hp)
In this part of the course, the student studies various aspects of contemporary Swedish society. This includes studies of traditions, education, gender, and popular culture. Sweden is compared with other countries and differences and similarities are discussed.
Teaching and working methods
Instruction take place in the form of lectures and mandatory seminars. Language of instruction: English
Examination
Examination may be written or oral.
Students failing an exam covering either the entire course or part of the course twice are entitled to have a new examiner appointed for the reexamination.
Students who have passed an examination may not retake it in order to improve their grades.

Planning and implementation of a course must take its starting point in the wording of the syllabus. The course evaluation included in each course must therefore take up the question how well the course agrees with the syllabus.
The course is carried out in such a way that both men´s and women´s experience and knowledge is made visible and developed.
