Intended learning outcomes

After completion of the course the student should be able to:

  • give a brief overview of the history of Sweden,
  • discuss different aspects of contemporary Swedish society and Swedish culture,
  • discuss and critically examine conceptions about Sweden and the Swedes.

Course content

Swedish History

In this section of the course, an overview of the political, economic, religious, cultural, and social development in Sweden from premodern times until today is given.
 

Swedish Culture and Society

In this part of the course, various aspects of contemporary Swedish society are presented and analysed, such as traditions, education, gender, and popular culture. Sweden is compared with other countries and differences and similarities are discussed.

Teaching and working methods

Instruction consists of lectures, mandatory seminars and one excursion.

The course is examined through:

Swedish History

  • Individual, written take home exam, grading scale: EC

Swedish Culture and Society

  • Individual, written assignments, grading scale: EC 
  • active participation in seminars, grading scale: EC/PF


For the final grade Pass (E), at least Pass (E) is required on the written take home exam and individual, written assignments and Pass on active participation in seminars.

For the final grade D, in addition at least 75 % D is required on the written take home exam and on written assignments.

For the final grade C, in addition at least 75 % C is required on the written take home exam and on written assignments.

For the final grade B, in addition at least 75 % B is required on the written take home exam and on written assignments.

For the final grade A, in addition at least 75 % A is required on the written take home exam and on written assignments.
 

If special circumstances prevail, and if it is possible with consideration of the nature of the compulsory component, the examiner may decide to replace the compulsory component with another equivalent component.

If the LiU coordinator for students with disabilities has granted a student the right to an adapted examination for a written examination in an examination hall, the student has the right to it.

If the coordinator has recommended for the student an adapted examination or alternative form of examination, the examiner may grant this if the examiner assesses that it is possible, based on consideration of the course objectives.

An examiner may also decide that an adapted examination or alternative form of examination if the examiner assessed that special circumstances prevail, and the examiner assesses that it is possible while maintaining the objectives of the course.

Students failing an exam covering either the entire course or part of the course twice are entitled to have a new examiner appointed for the reexamination.

Students who have passed an examination may not retake it in order to improve their grades.
