Entry requirements

Applicants must hold a bachelor's degree/kandidatexamen of at least 180 ECTS credits, including a 15 ECTS credit degree paper, or equivalent, within humanities, behavioral or social sciences, natural sciences, mathematics, statistics, economics, or computer science. Additionally required at least 7,5 ECTS credits of statistics or equivalent.
Documented knowledge of English equivalent to Engelska B/Engelska 6. 

Intended learning outcomes

After completing the course students should at an advanced level be able to:
- account for statistical models commonly used in social science research,
- apply statistical models used in social science research,
- design a quantitative study, based on a relevant research question,
- critically examine quantitative studies and design choices,
- perform and interpret statistical analyzes.

Course content

This course covers at an advanced level an overview of essentials methods and estimation techniques for applied statistical analyses in the social sciences. An understanding of  the methods and how they work in practice is developed. The focus is on applications of quantitative modelling. Fundamentals of applied statistical analyses, including how to assess a quantitative research design, execute and interpret standard models are covered.

Teaching and working methods

The course includes seminars, lab sessions, presentations, and discussions. In addition, students should exercise self-study. Language of instruction: English.

Examination

Examination consist of active participation in seminars, and an individual written paper. Detailed information about the examination can be found in the course’s study guide.

Students failing an exam covering either the entire course or part of the course twice are entitled to have a new examiner appointed for the reexamination.

Students who have passed an examination may not retake it in order to improve their grades.
