Intended learning outcomes

On completion of the course, the student should be able to:
- critically, independently and creatively be able to identify and formulate an issue in the history of Christianity and examine it independently in the form of an essay by means of the theory and method traditions of the discipline
- orally and in writing, account for and discuss the independent conclusions, knowledge and arguments that underlie these
- analyse, assess and discuss other essays, or equivalent work in the subject area
- critically discuss the possibilities and limitations of the field of scholarship, its role in society and people's responsibility for how it is used.

Course content

From the theory and method traditions of the discipline, the student independently examines an issue in the history of Christianity. The results are presented in writing in the form of an essay that is defended at an essay seminar. The possibilities and limitations of the field of scholarship are discussed in the course. Another essay, or other equivalent work, is analysed, assessed and discussed.

Teaching and working methods

The independent thesis work is supported by a course introduction and supervision, and a completing essay seminar. The student should actively and constructively prepare before supervision and the seminar sessions.

Examination

The course is examined through participation in compulsory seminars/supervision sessions and final review, but mainly through assessing the completed essay and public discussion on other students' theses. Detailed information can be found in the study guide.

If special circumstances prevail, and if it is possible with consideration of the nature of the compulsory component, the examiner may decide to replace the compulsory component with another equivalent component.

If the LiU coordinator for students with disabilities has granted a student the right to an adapted examination for a written examination in an examination hall, the student has the right to it.

If the coordinator has recommended for the student an adapted examination or alternative form of examination, the examiner may grant this if the examiner assesses that it is possible, based on consideration of the course objectives.

An examiner may also decide that an adapted examination or alternative form of examination if the examiner assessed that special circumstances prevail, and the examiner assesses that it is possible while maintaining the objectives of the course.

Students failing an exam covering either the entire course or part of the course twice are entitled to have a new examiner appointed for the reexamination.

Students who have passed an examination may not retake it in order to improve their grades.
