Intended learning outcomes

After completion of the course students should give evidence of:
• knowledge of how to analyse and problematise different phenomena in the field of outdoor education
• skill and ability to produce a scholarly thesis with a focus on natural science
• proficiency in reading and critically examining scholarly texts and methods of research.

Course content

During this course the student will write a thesis in environmental and outdoor education with a scientific focus, where the knowledge acquired in earlier courses during the programme is deepened and combined. The student will select and delimit the topic together with his or her tutor. The student will define, research and explicate his or her work in the light of different concepts of learning. The nature of the thesis may be either subject specific or cross-disciplinary. Whatever the topic the thesis must have a theoretical basis.

Teaching and working methods

Instruction consists of fieldwork in outdoor environments, lectures, literature study, seminars and study visits. The thesis is an individual product with a clearly scientific, theoretical and methodological approach, which treats problems connected with teacher competence and learning contexts.

Examination

The student will present and defend the thesis at a seminar, critically comment on a fellow student’s thesis and participate actively as a listener at a further seminar.

Other information

Planning and implementation of a course must take its starting point in the wording of the syllabus. The course evaluation included in each course must therefore take up the question how well the course agrees with the syllabus. The course is carried out in such a way that both men's and women's experience and knowledge is made visible and developed.
