Intended learning outcomes

The course provides practice in using the English language correctly in professional and academic contexts. It also gives students the opportunity to deepen and extend their knowledge in some of the areas that are encompassed by Graphic Design and Communication. In addition, the course allows students to deepen and expand their vocabulary, particularly with terminology that can they can expect to encounter professionally. After completing the course, students are expected to

  • be able to read, understand and discuss texts of different types

  • have command of a more extensive vocabulary connectedto the field of visual design

  • be able to use the English language appropriately both in writing and orally

  • present information and ideas to an international public

  • formulate and defend their own ideas and opinions

  • write reports and shorter texts of different types

  • describe and analyse an advertisement

  • have identified and analysed their own linguistic strengths and weaknesses and learned how to develop and apply strategies to improve their language skills.

Course content

Texts to read and discuss, often connected to aspects of the programme. Instruction and training is given in presentation techniques, and there is writing practice, often connected to classwork or to texts that have been read. Grammar is revised and practiced.

Teaching and working methods

The course consists mainly of lessons and seminars that are based on texts that the students have prepared. There are some short lectures and provide a basis for an individual project that is presented both orally and as a written report. There may also be an opposition. The course extends over the whole term.
