Intended learning outcomes

The students will acquire fundamental verbal and written skills in German after having completed the course. The students will also have a good command of basic cultural concepts and knowledge of Germany and of German speaking countries’ society with emphasis on the political, historical and cultural identity as a basis for relations within both social and professional settings. After completion of the course the students will have the verbal skills and knowledge required to continue their studies in the subject with a concentration on technical language and intercultural communication.

Course content

Through studying and translating texts (articles, non-fiction, technical documents, literature) verbal, and written language skills respectively are trained and developed with an emphasis on grammar, syntax, pronunciation and relevant professional terminology (mathematics, natural science etc.) which relates to other subject areas as well.
The study of different cultural definitions and different cultural dimensions. The study of Gemany’s and of German speaking countries’ history, geography, cultural and political distinctions with emphasis on the countries’ social development and social changes. French values and relationships to its social system (institutions, welfare, education etc.) are stressed and compared to Swedish traditions and gives new perspective to the cultural differences between Germany and Sweden.

Teaching and working methods

Instruction of the course is given in both lecture and seminar form. The pedagogical methods give the students a broad spectrum for sharing knowledge through communicative activities.
