Prerequisites

Three years of completed university studies. Admission to masterprogramme in Design. Knowledge of design for sustainability.

Intended learning outcomes

The main objective is for students to develop knowledge about and skills for different perspectives on sustainability and associated design strategies. After the completed course the student shall be able to

  • Articulate the differences between visions on sustainability and their associated design strategies
  • Argue for the selection of a specific strategy in light of a given challenge, while articulating its limitations
  • Independently apply one of the strategies to a design challenge

Course content

Contemporary perspectives on sustainability and associated design strategies, such as, applied eco-design, cradle to cradle, biomimicry, circular economy. The course will cover underlying sustainability visions, associated design strategies, and business rationale. Critical and reflective reading, tools and methods.

Teaching and working methods

The course will be organized around lectures, discussion seminars, analytic workshops, cases, and a condensed design assignment. Recent output will be presented by researchers and mutually critically assessed.
