Intended learning outcomes
The aim of the course is to enable students to acquire a general knowledge, historical as well as theoretical, of Design and Visual Culture in the Western Society. The goal is to create a basic understanding of Visual Communication and Visual Culture from the years 1900 until today.
After having completed the course, the students should:
- Have acquired a general knowledge of the Western Visual Culture from about 1900 and onwards,
- Have developed the ability to describe images and design products in speech as well as in writing,
- Have achieved the ability to an argumentative reasoning and critically reflection on social norms and critical aspects regarding the Western tradition of images, in speech as well as in writing.
Course content
The course covers the Image Cultures of the 2000 Century, where design and Norm Criticism are important issues. The theoretical framework includes:
- Visual culture/Art Science
- Design History
- Norm Criticism
Teaching and working methods
The teaching of the course is provided through lectures, seminars and project works in groups. Excursions may also be included in the course.
Seminars, project works and excursions are compulsory for all students.
