  • Bachelor's degree in urban and regional planning or other relevant subject area equivalent to a Swedish Kandidatexamen
  • English corresponding to the level of English in Swedish upper secondary education (English 6)

  • At least 75 ECTS credits passed from the programme, including the course Research Methods in Strategic Regional and Urban Planning, 7,5 ECTS credits

Intended learning outcomes

On completion of the course, the student must, at an advanced level, be able to:

Knowledge and understanding

  • summarise and critically analyse current research in strategic urban and regional planning
  • identify and contribute to areas of development in the field of strategic urban and regional planning

Competence and skills  

  • independently formulate a relevant research problem in the field of strategic urban and regional planning
  • plan, implement and present in writing an advanced, independent work in the field of strategic urban and regional planning, within given time and resource limits
  •  apply in-depth subject and method knowledge in strategic urban and regional planning

Judgement and approach

  • critically assess, evaluate and discuss other scientific texts using a scientific approach
  • discuss and defend an independent work using a scientific approach

Course content

In the course, a current research problem in the field of strategic urban and regional planning is addressed. The course includes an independent work. In the course, an advanced independent work in strategic urban and regional planning is planned, executed and presented in writing. In the course, in-depth subject and method knowledge as well as current research are analysed. In the course, an independent work is discussed, presented and defended. The course includes critical assessment, evaluation and discussion of other independent works.

Teaching and working methods

The teaching consists of seminars and supervision.  

In addition to this, the student is to conduct independent study.

The student is entitled to supervision during the term when he or she is registered for the course. If there are particular reasons, and if the supervision resource has not been used up during the term, the course coordinator can, in consultation with the supervisor, decide to offer supervision during the subsequent term.

Language of examination: English 

Examination

The course is examined by way of:

  • submission of thesis outline EC/PF
  • active participation in seminars EC/PF
  • opposition and presentation in examination seminars EC/PF
  • submission of final thesis EC

For a passing final grade (E), the student must achieve at least a pass in active participation in seminars, presentation of independent work, opposition and presentation, and an E grade on the master’s essay.

Higher grades are based on individual written independent work.

If special circumstances prevail, and if it is possible with consideration of the nature of the compulsory component, the examiner may decide to replace the compulsory component with another equivalent component.

If the LiU coordinator for students with disabilities has granted a student the right to an adapted examination for a written examination in an examination hall, the student has the right to it.

If the coordinator has recommended for the student an adapted examination or alternative form of examination, the examiner may grant this if the examiner assesses that it is possible, based on consideration of the course objectives.

An examiner may also decide that an adapted examination or alternative form of examination if the examiner assessed that special circumstances prevail, and the examiner assesses that it is possible while maintaining the objectives of the course.

Students failing an exam covering either the entire course or part of the course twice are entitled to have a new examiner appointed for the reexamination.

Students who have passed an examination may not retake it in order to improve their grades.
