Intended learning outcomes

On completing the course, the students should be able to:

  • understand and sum up academic texts written in English
  • formulate their own academic texts in written English, with basic requirements fulfilled concerning form, content, grammatical structure and a formal and academic English vocabulary;
  • correctly make use of reference and citation techniques when using secondary sources, and correctly apply academic reference systems;
  • give an oral presentation in English

Course content

The course contains a systematic overview of how to write different academic texts in English, with a focus on argumentation, structure, vocabulary and referencing. The course focuses on the analysis and production of academic texts, but there are also exercises in presentation technique.

Teaching and working methods

The tuition consists of lectures, seminars, lessons, group work and exercises. In addition to this, the course requires self-study.

Language: English

The course is examined through

  • active participation in seminars, grading scale: UG
  • portfolio, grading scale: UV
  • take-home exam, grading scale: UV

For a G (pass) on the course, all the above examinations must have been passed. For a VG (pass with distinction), the portfolio needs to have been given a VG.

If special circumstances prevail, and if it is possible with consideration of the nature of the compulsory component, the examiner may decide to replace the compulsory component with another equivalent component.

If the LiU coordinator for students with disabilities has granted a student the right to an adapted examination for a written examination in an examination hall, the student has the right to it. If the coordinator has instead recommended for the student an adapted examination or alternative form of examination, the examiner may grant this if the examiner assesses that it is possible, based on consideration of the course objectives.

Students failing an exam covering either the entire course or part of the course twice are entitled to have a new examiner appointed for the reexamination.

Students who have passed an examination may not retake it in order to improve their grades.

Three-grade scale, U, G, VG
