- 30 ECTS credits passed in History of Art, continuation course
- History of Art, in-depth course 30 ECTS credits with 22,5 ECTS credits passed including essay 15 ECTS credits
or equivalent
Intended learning outcomes
On completion of the course, the student should:
- have a methodological confidence and an advanced ability to formulate problems and independently and critically relate to sources and scientific texts,
- have advanced knowledge of a special field of art history,
- have the qualifications that are required to work in the subject-related scientific environments,
- have ability to study and perform tasks in an independent and advanced way.
Course content
Individual In-depth Reading, 7.5 HE credits (Individuell fördjupning)
The student chooses an individual independent study in consultation with the supervisor that should not be within the specialisation that the thesis work covers.
Common Reading and Discussion Seminars, 7.5 HE credits (Gemensam fördjupning)
This module includes a seminar, common for all students, on a special subject, that is studied critically and discussed. This module includes individually presenting particularly studied material and lead a seminar discussion on the material.
Thesis, 15 HE credits (Uppsats)
The essay constitutes individual work and has high requirements for the orientation of the problem and independence in relation to the material and the critical treatment of the material. Critical oral review constitutes a compulsory part of the module.
Teaching and working methods
During the course, teaching takes the form of seminars, supervision and possible study visits, where the student's efforts include preparations for the discussions, studies of both common and individual in-depth literature, leading seminars and critical review of fellow students theses, etcetera Language of instruction: Swedish.
Examination
The optional courses are examined orally or through take-home examinations. The examination of the thesis course includes a compulsory thesis work, a compulsory critical review assignment and active participation in seminars.
If special circumstances prevail, and if it is possible with consideration of the nature of the compulsory component, the examiner may decide to replace the compulsory component with another equivalent component.
If the LiU coordinator for students with disabilities has granted a student the right to an adapted examination for a written examination in an examination hall, the student has the right to it.
If the coordinator has recommended for the student an adapted examination or alternative form of examination, the examiner may grant this if the examiner assesses that it is possible, based on consideration of the course objectives.
An examiner may also decide that an adapted examination or alternative form of examination if the examiner assessed that special circumstances prevail, and the examiner assesses that it is possible while maintaining the objectives of the course.
Students failing an exam covering either the entire course or part of the course twice are entitled to have a new examiner appointed for the reexamination.
Students who have passed an examination may not retake it in order to improve their grades.

Planning and implementation of a course must take its starting point in the wording of the syllabus. The course evaluation included in each course must therefore take up the question how well the course agrees with the syllabus.
The course is conducted in such a way that there are equal opportunities with regard to sex, transgender identity or expression, ethnicity, religion or other belief, disability, sexual orientation and age.
If special circumstances prevail, the vice-chancellor may in a special decision specify the preconditions for temporary deviations from this course syllabus, and delegate the right to take such decisions.
