Intended learning outcomes

On completion of the course, the student should be able to
- account for central research finds in cognition and emotion, and the interplay between emotional and cognitive systems in the brain,
- explain relationships between different environmental factors, emotions and cognition,
- critically evaluate central cognitive-psychological theories and models of emotion,
- critically evaluate evolutionary psychological theories of emotion and cognition
- apply knowledge about the interplay between emotional and cognitive systems on people's behaviour in different situations, particularly when it includes assessments, decision and preferences.

Course content

The following is studied in the course
- cognitive science theories of emotion
- the neuropsychological basis for the interplay between cognition and emotion, including neuroanatomical and neurochemical aspects
- evolutionary psychological theories regarding emotion and cognition
- arousal and stress
- relationships between physical environment and emotion
- emotional design
- dual-process models
- interpretation and attribution of emotion
- the relationship between cognition, emotion and action

Teaching and working methods

Teaching primarily takes the form of distance seminars. The student is expected to study independently, individually or in groups.

Examination

The course is examined in writing through a take-home exam/written assignment and through active participation in seminars. Detailed information can be found in the study guide.

Students failing an exam covering either the entire course or part of the course twice are entitled to have a new examiner appointed for the reexamination.

Students who have passed an examination may not retake it in order to improve their grades.
