Intended learning outcomes

On completion of the course, the student should be able to
- in writing, account for central theories, models, methods and research finds in cognitive psychology,
- describe the emergence of cognitive psychology as a scientific discipline and how it is related to adjacent disciplines, such as neuroscience, linguistics, philosophy and computer science,
- explain behaviour based on cognitive theories,
- compare different explanations of the same phenomenon and be able to discuss such differences critically.

Course content

The course is focused on the following areas:
- The historical emergence of psychology
- Basic neuropsychology
- Information processing
- Focused and divided attention, automatic and controlled processes
- Consciousness and memory
- Sense and perception
- Representation and operations
- Language and thinking, and language acquisition, production and understanding
- Contextualised and distributed cognition
- Problem solving, decision making and logical thinking
- Creativity and different types of intelligence, intelligence tests, heritage and environmental influence
- Cognitive and socio-cultural development and cognitive ageing

Teaching and working methods

The teaching takes the form of lectures and compulsory seminars. The student is expected to study independently, individually or in groups.

Examination

The course is examined through written examination and active participation in seminars.
