Intended learning outcomes

After completion of the course, the student should be able to:

  • explain the concepts children’s cultural heritage, children’s culture, and culture for children
  • account for and analyse how children are represented or adressed in museums
  • discuss alternative ways to represent and adress children in museums

Course content

The course introduces the theoretical and methodological concept of children’s cultural heritage. The starting point is all children’s right to participate in culture and cultural heritage. The meaning of childrens culture and culture for children are central in the course. The course delves into challenges of representing children and children’s culture at cultural heritage institutions, particularly at museums. Political and ethical dimensions of representing children in archival collelctions and museum displays are discussed, as well as how children are adressed as museum visitors.

In the course, theoretical insights from interdisciplinary child studies are combined with cultural heritage studies. An individual analysis of a museum is a central part of the course.
