General entry requirements for undergraduate studies. English corresponding to the level of English in Swedish upper secondary education (English 6/B).

Intended learning outcomes

After completion of the course, the students should be able to:
- identify the central research fields and areas of application of anthropology 
- describe and explain the basic concepts, theories and methods of anthropology and explain how these can be applied in the study of human societies
- compare different theories of how biology and culture are interrelated and form human beliefs, perceptions and behaviour

- relate and discuss the impact of globalization on humans and their societies, from an anthropological perspective

- identify and discuss contemporary social, cultural, economic and environmental threats against a sustainable development 

Course content

The course introduces anthropology and its concepts, theories and methods. In the course, you will discover in what ways humans face and deal with existential challenges, and engage in discussions of how biology and culture are interconnected and shape human beliefs, perceptions and behaviour. The course also focuses on the impact of globalization on human beings and their societies worldwide, the threats against a sustainable development and possible solutions to these problems. The course is based on a digital interactive learning tool with various tools and applications. Great emphasis is placed on learning how to use an anthropological perspective in the study of one’s own and other peoples’ societies. 

Teaching and working methods

The course is a distance-learning course and is based on a digital learning tool where the student is able to engage in independent studies, and interactive learning including knowledge self-tests. Detailed information is provided in the study guide.  

Examination

The course is examined by a number of individually written home assignments. Detailed information about the examination procedure is provided in the study guide.  

Students failing an exam covering either the entire course or part of the course twice are entitled to have a new examiner appointed for the reexamination.

Students who have passed an examination may not retake it in order to improve their grades.

Other information

Planning and implementation of a course must take its starting point in the wording of the syllabus. The course evaluation included in each course must therefore take up the question how well the course agrees with the syllabus. 

The course is carried out in such a way that both men´s and women´s experience and knowledge is made visible and developed.
