Entry requirements
A bachelor’s degree in the humanities, fine arts, social sciences, behavioural sciences, health sciences or natural sciences or equivalent qualifications are required.
Documented knowledge of English equivalent to Engelska 6.
Intended learning outcomes
On completion of the course the student on advanced level shall be able to
– account for dominant research traditions with relevance for the study of ethnicity and migration;
– analyse a relevant research challenge in ethnic and migration studies by applying adequate methodological perspectives and methods;
– explain and support the choice of specific methods.
Course content
In this course in-depth knowledge of one or several methodological perspectives and methods relevant in the study of migration and ethnic relations is conveyed, partly by presenting an outline of limited research task and with particular focus on the choice of method. In this way the course facilitates acquisition of the methodological insight and skills that enable students to resolve demanding research tasks with adequate methods. The relation between methodology and the academic writing process is also addressed in the course.
Teaching and working methods
Teaching in the course has the colloquium or workshop format, with a substantial portion of independent studies and seminars. Language of instruction is English.
Examination
The course is examined through seminar participation and written assignments. Detailed information about the examination can be found in the course’s study guide.
Students failing an exam covering either the entire course or part of the course twice are entitled to have a new examiner appointed for the reexamination.
Students who have passed an examination may not retake it in order to improve their grades.
