Intended learning outcomes

Upon completing the course, the student should be able to:

• Identify, explain, and critically examine key concepts within IT law.
• Verbally and in writing, present and discuss conclusions, acquired knowledge, and arguments within IT law.
• Critically analyze, identify, and propose solutions to specific problems that may arise in the application of IT law in relation to ethical principles, sustainability aspects, and social consequences.

Course content

The course addresses the legal frameworks applicable to information technology and the internet, with a focus on the following areas: protection of individuals concerning the processing of personal data, cybercrime and cybersecurity, digital platforms and social media, artificial intelligence, and intellectual property rights related to information technology. Current regulations are reviewed and critically examined during the course.

The course also covers compliance issues from a corporate perspective within the legal areas discussed.

Global, EU, and national frameworks are consistently covered in the course. Additionally, the implications of digitization and developments in information technology are discussed from legal, ethical, and social perspectives. Furthermore, the future development of the regulatory framework in IT law is discussed, as well as the significance of regulation as a tool for a sustainable social development.

Teaching and working methods

The teaching consists of lectures and seminars. In addition to this, students are expected to engage in self-study.

Examination

The course is assessed through:

• Individual written examination, grading scale: EC
• Active participation in seminars, grading scale: Pass/Fail

A Pass grade is required for all components to achieve a Pass grade for the course. For a Pass with Distinction grade, a Pass with Distinction is also required in the individual written examination.

If special circumstances prevail, and if it is possible with consideration of the nature of the compulsory component, the examiner may decide to replace the compulsory component with another equivalent component.

If the LiU coordinator for students with disabilities has granted a student the right to an adapted examination for a written examination in an examination hall, the student has the right to it.

If the coordinator has recommended for the student an adapted examination or alternative form of examination, the examiner may grant this if the examiner assesses that it is possible, based on consideration of the course objectives.

An examiner may also decide that an adapted examination or alternative form of examination if the examiner assessed that special circumstances prevail, and the examiner assesses that it is possible while maintaining the objectives of the course.

Students failing an exam covering either the entire course or part of the course twice are entitled to have a new examiner appointed for the reexamination.

Students who have passed an examination may not retake it in order to improve their grades.

Other information

Planning and implementation of a course must take its starting point in the wording of the syllabus. The course evaluation included in each course must therefore take up the question how well the course agrees with the syllabus.

If special circumstances prevail, the vice-chancellor may in a special decision specify the preconditions for temporary deviations from this course syllabus, and delegate the right to take such decisions.
