Entry requirements

  • Bachelor's degree equivalent to a Swedish Kandidatexamen in social sciences or humanities or equivalent
  • English corresponding to the level of English in Swedish upper secondary education (Engelska 6)
  • At least 60 ECTS credits from the Master's programme in Gender including the courses Analytical Tools, 6 ECTS credits and Master Thesis (one year), 15 ECTS credits

Intended learning outcomes

Through completion of the master thesis, the student should, on an advanced level within the field of Gender Studies – Intersectionality and Change, be able to:

  • critically and independently define a relevant research problem, and analyse it in a scholarly way, based on a well-argued research design, including reflections on choice of theoretical frameworks, methodological tools, ethical approaches, empirical materials and methods for collecting them;
  • choose advanced and complex theoretical frameworks, methodologies and methods to analyse a relevant research problem;
  • make an advanced and complex analysis regarding a relevant research problem;
  • describe and account for the sub-field within which the master’s project is defined;
  • argue, in a relevant scholarly way, for the possibilities and limitations of their research project;
  • position themselves in relation to the research questions of the thesis in a relevant and self-reflexive way;
  • identify their personal needs for further knowledge and take responsibility for their ongoing learning processes;
  • produce a coherent and independently written documentation of the research in a style and genre which documents academic accountability and competence, including the appropriate use of scholarly citations, references and sources.

Course content

The course deals with research problems: complex theoretical frameworks and methodologies and methods, subject selection, design and advanced analysis. Writing a scientific work in a style and genre which documents academic accountability and competence, including the appropriate use of scholarly citations, references and sources.

Teaching and working methods

The teaching consists of supervision, self-study and seminars online. 

Supervision is given during the period of the course, over the ordinary examination opportunity and the subsequent two collection opportunities.

Examination

The examination consists of

  • individual written master thesis, grading: EC
  • active participation in seminars, grading: EC
  • oral opposition, grading: EC
  • oral defence, grading: EC

For an approved final grade, at least E is required on the individually written Master's Thesis and Pass on other examination elements.The grade for the Master Thesis determines the final grade for the course.

For extensive completion, the highest grade that can be obtained is C.

If special circumstances prevail, and if it is possible with consideration of the nature of the compulsory component, the examiner may decide to replace the compulsory component with another equivalent component.

If the LiU coordinator for students with disabilities has granted a student the right to an adapted examination for a written examination in an examination hall, the student has the right to it.

If the coordinator has recommended for the student an adapted examination or alternative form of examination, the examiner may grant this if the examiner assesses that it is possible, based on consideration of the course objectives.

An examiner may also decide that an adapted examination or alternative form of examination if the examiner assessed that special circumstances prevail, and the examiner assesses that it is possible while maintaining the objectives of the course.

Students failing an exam covering either the entire course or part of the course twice are entitled to have a new examiner appointed for the reexamination.

Students who have passed an examination may not retake it in order to improve their grades.
