Intended learning outcomes
Upon the completion of the course, the students should be able to:
- discuss the genealogies of queer studies and state-of-the-art developments of this research field
- account for concepts of queer theory
- account for and compare the theories in queer studies research
- independently identify, select, and use relevant methods and theories in queer studies
- apply queer analytical perspectives on a topic relevant for queer studies
Course content
The course provides an introduction to the field of queer studies. It offers and overview of the core questions, concepts, problems, debates, and analytical tools crucial for queer theorising.
The course focuses specifically on the genealogy of queer studies; queer theory; gender, sex, and sexuality; subjectivity; aesthetics, visual culture, and representation; and state-of-the-art developments in the field, such as queer ecologies and queer death studies. The course materials include academic and popular texts, visual artworks, and films.
Teaching and working methods
The teaching consists of lectures, seminars, and co-tutor groups. In addition to this, the student must practice self-study.
The language of instruction and examination is English.
Examination
The course is examined by:
- Active participation in co-tutor group, grading scale: EC (P/F)
- Individually written assignments, grading scale: EC (P/F)
- Individually written final assignment, grading scale: EC
For an approved final grade, at least E is required on the individually written final assignment and Pass on other examination elements. The grade for the individually written final assignment determines the final grade for the course.
In the case of supplementation of the final assignment, the highest possible grade is a C.

If special circumstances prevail, and if it is possible with consideration of the nature of the compulsory component, the examiner may decide to replace the compulsory component with another equivalent component.
If the LiU coordinator for students with disabilities has granted a student the right to an adapted examination for a written examination in an examination hall, the student has the right to it.
If the coordinator has recommended for the student an adapted examination or alternative form of examination, the examiner may grant this if the examiner assesses that it is possible, based on consideration of the course objectives.
An examiner may also decide that an adapted examination or alternative form of examination if the examiner assessed that special circumstances prevail, and the examiner assesses that it is possible while maintaining the objectives of the course.
Students failing an exam covering either the entire course or part of the course twice are entitled to have a new examiner appointed for the reexamination.
Students who have passed an examination may not retake it in order to improve their grades.

Planning and implementation of a course must take its starting point in the wording of the syllabus. The course evaluation included in each course must therefore take up the question how well the course agrees with the syllabus.
