Course offered for

  • Master of Science in Design and Product Development

Intended learning outcomes

After completing the course, the student shall be able to:

  1. Generate, visualise and develop alternative interaction design concepts for digital, and digitally enabled, products.
  2. Create and evaluate prototypes at appropriate levels of fidelity, and iteratively improve a design based on feedback and other relevant evidence.
  3. Design interactive products that take account of relevant standards or guidelines.
  4. Describe and apply fundamental concepts, principles and methods in interaction design and user experience design.
  5. Formulate design ideas as hypotheses that can be investigated through prototyping and evaluation.
  6. Explain and justify design decisions using support from relevant theory and the objectives and constraints of the design project.

Course content

The student shall develop foundational knowledge and practical ability in interaction and user experience (UX) design, with particular emphasis on concept development and iterative design of interactive, digital and digitally enabled products.

The students of this course develop methodological and theoretical knowledge in design of digital interactive products. Design methods, reflection and criticism supported by theory is mixed with practical creative design work, prototyping and evaluation. Students learn to reflect on their own design work in relation to constraints and user experience.

Examination

UPG1Group assignment2 creditsU, G
UPG2Design assignment2 creditsU, 3, 4, 5
UPG3Individual reflection2 creditsU, 3, 4, 5

The examination assesses the use of design methods in the development of interactive products and services. Design process, design outcomes, evaluation activities, and the rationale for design decisions are considered. Particular emphasis is placed on understanding the design situation and connecting it to theory and design knowledge, as well as the communication of design decisions.

Higher grades are awarded for well-motivated design decisions, skillful use of design methods, critical reflection, and creative solutions that demonstrably address usability and experiential qualities.

Grades for examination modules are decided in accordance with the assessment criteria presented at the start of the course.
