Prerequisites

Statics, dynamics, linear algebra, single and multivariable calculus, strength of materials, machine elements, and control engineering.

Intended learning outcomes

The objective of the course is to familiarise the student with fundamental laws, relationships, and methods within structural dynamics, and to develop the skills to independently apply these to realistic structural dynamics problems. Upon completion of the course, the student will be able to:

  • understand and use definitions and fundamental concepts within the subject;
  • model more complex structural dynamics systems;
  • solve structural dynamics problems using appropriate methods; and
  • analyse more complex vibration problems.

Course content

Modelling of structural vibrations for single or in multi-degrees of freedom systems; lumped models; damped and undamped vibrations; free and forced vibrations; nonlinear vibrations; stability; modal analysis; expansion theorem; egenfrequency and eigenvector; Lagrange's equations of motion; vibration analysis using the finite element method; transient analysis; and model-order reduction. Individual topics may be added or omitted as required.

Teaching and working methods

Teaching is delivered through lectures, tutorials, and computer-based laboratory sessions. The theory and methods of the subject are presented during the lectures and subsequently reinforced in tutorials, where students solve idealised problems independently. The computer sessions are designed to provide in-depth knowledge and train students to handle more complex problems.

Other information

Commissioned education is a form of education governed by the regulation on commissioned assignment at universities (SFS 2002:760).

Planning and implementation of a course must take its starting point in the wording of the syllabus. The course evaluation included in each course must therefore take up the question how well the course agrees with the syllabus.

The course is conducted in such a way that there are equal opportunities with regard to sex, transgender identity or expression, ethnicity, religion or other belief, disability, sexual orientation and age.

If special circumstances prevail, the vice-chancellor may in a special decision specify the preconditions for temporary deviations from this course syllabus, and delegate the right to take such decisions.
