Intended learning outcomes

On completion of the course, the student should be able to:

• discuss the relationship between manifest phenomena, social actions and cognitive processes in various forms of human interaction
• account for the state of the art in a limited part of the interaction analysis field
• formulate questions relevant to cognitive science and addressable using interaction analytic methodology
• identify an interactional phenomenon and relate this to previous research in the interaction analytic field
• perform a defensible analysis of interaction, using video recorded data, where both verbal and multimodal communicative resources are taken into account
• draft academic text that is formally correct and that follows current praxis in the interaction analytic studies

Course content

This course continues previous studies in interaction analysis. Theory, methodology and results in the field of ethnomethodological interaction and conversation analysis are discussed. The interrelationships between visible and audible behavior, social actions and cognitive processes in various forms of human interaction are discussed, theoretically as well as in relation to video recorded data. The students deepen their competence in relation to a clearly defined area in the field, and carries out a complete study in that area, from data collection to a finished scientific report. The course actualizes how questions of relevance for cognitive science can be formulated to be answerable using interaction analytic methodology. Student reports focus either on a phenomenon not previously observed in the literature, which is related to the state of the art, or a previously described phenomenon, which is then problematized and reanalyzed. During the course, the student performs a scientifically defensible analysis of interaction, using video recorded data, where both verbal and multimodal communicative resources are taken into account.

Teaching and working methods

The course is carried out in the form of lectures, seminars, data sessions, field work and peer review activities. In addition, individual studies are required.

Examination

If the LiU coordinator for students with disabilities has granted a student the right to an adapted examination for a written examination in an examination hall, the student has the right to it. If the coordinator has instead recommended for the student an adapted examination or alternative form of examination, the examiner may grant this if the examiner assesses that it is possible, based on consideration of the course objectives.

Students failing an exam covering either the entire course or part of the course twice are entitled to have a new examiner appointed for the reexamination.

Students who have passed an examination may not retake it in order to improve their grades.
