After completing the course, the student should be able to

  • discuss how the surrounding society and natural environment can serve as a basis for environmental and sustainability education
  • plan and justify environmental and sustainability education that includes environments outside the classroom.

Course content

The course addresses environmental and sustainability education where pedagogical foundations and didactic choices for this are discussed and tested. The course includes planning one's own teaching material for sustainability education where the course theory is applied to any practical activity. The relevance of outdoor education for environmental and sustainability education is discussed and problematized, and the course addresses how different environments outside the classroom can contribute to teaching and learning about sustainability. Theories about human relationships to place are covered, as well as concepts such as ecosystem services and planetary boundaries.
